20th Anniversary Celebration

It is hard to believe, but we have been in business for 20 years! Some may remember us from our start in 2004 in Yarmouth – we had a lot less gray in our hair then. Following a devastating fire on January 1, 2009, we moved to our current location in Freeport and reopened as Freeport Wild Bird Supply. Not only did we bounce back from the fire, but also made it through the Great Recession and a global pandemic, becoming stronger with each challenge.

We are so grateful for the continued support you have all shown us through these two decades. Our mission from the start was to provide high quality products with excellent, science-based advice to allow you to enjoy the birds around you and keep them safe as well. That vision quickly expanded into birding tours and guiding, advocacy efforts, and community involvement, and each of those continue to grow to this day.

So it’s time to celebrate! Join us this August for a series of events to celebrate the store, our community, and you!

Events will take place August 1st -  September 26th

*Chebeague and Cumberland Land Trust is raising funds to acquire and steward two interior forested parcels of land on Chebeague Island that provide habitat for birds in Casco Bay. Migratory birds need places to land, feed, and recover from overnight migration, and forested lands in the Casco Bay Islands are critical for this stop over recovery. Large tracts of undeveloped land are rare, and this projects aims to conserve two more parcels that will help protect the center of the island. In fact, some of the birds that land and rest in these very forests are some of the migrants that take part in the Morning Flight phenomena at Sandy Point on Cousin's Island. This donation will just be a drop in the bucket, so if you are interested in helping even more, visit their webpage here.

The Finch Research Network is raising money for their Evening Grosbeak Road to Recovery Project. The auction money donation will be matched dollar-for-dollar with a grant, and the funds will be used to continue and expand the project. With a decline of 92% since 1970, this spectacular finch was once a favorite visitor to our feeding stations, and brings back memories of yesteryear. FIRN has been doing outreach around the project, in addition to tagging and banding of Evening Grosbeaks that has taken place in Maine, New York, Pennsylvania, Minnesota and Utah. The project helps with determining connectivity between different populations. The Finch Research Network is dedicated to the study and conservation of finches and their habitats globally. Derek is a proud member of the Evening Grosbeak Working Group, one of the many projects that we are part of as we strive to be more than just a bird store.
